This paper addresses the following question: what happens when people pool their resources in a project but also compete for market share? This question is at the heart of project management in the cultural industries. To be viable, these projects must find a compromise between competition and collaboration. To conceptualize this compromise, we used the theoretical framework On Justification by Boltanski and Thévenot (2006). These authors represented society with six independent worlds, and they explored compromises between the various worlds. We associate competition with the market world and collaboration with the civic world. Boltanski and Thévenot (2006) did not find a figure of compromise between these two worlds, but we suggest that coopetition is a viable form of compromise. We undertook 50 semi-structured interviews with professional visual artists to empirically support our assumptions that (1) coopetition is the answer to our initial question, and (2) it is the figure of compromise between the market and civic worlds. Our findings contribute to the literature on coopetition in project management by presenting three typical cases of coopetition in projects in cultural industries: artwork creation projects, art exhibition projects in private galleries, and art exhibition projects in cooperative galleries. We also contribute to the literature on Boltanski and Thévenot (2006) theoretical framework by exploring a new figure of compromise.

Creative organizations are characterized by project management and struggle with a tension between their creative activities and their project management activities. They must reach a compromise allowing the management of this tension. This research’s objective is to explore this compromise as a contingency factor in the competitive positioning of these organizations in the creative market. Therefore, this research supports existing project management literature on contingency. To do so, we conducted a multiple correspondence analysis with data collected (semi-structured interviews) from 35 creative workers, artistic directors and project managers working in 11 advertising agencies. The theoretical framework of justification of Boltanski and Thévenot (1991, 2006) was used to explore the compromise as a contingency factor. This research proposes a practical and a theoretical contribution. On the one hand, it guides creative organizations wanting to modify their competitive positioning based on managing the compromise of the tension between creative activities and project management activities. On the second hand, it uses an original analysis technique to study the contingency in the management of projects.

Objective - To propose a discussion, based on the main theoretical frameworks in the organizational sciences, of institutional pharmacy management practices.

Description of problem - An organizational analysis of institutional pharmacy practice highlighting its structuring process is presented. The first part illustrates management practices in the health-care system and in pharmacy departments. The second part illustrates the fact that an array of theoretical frameworks can enrich our understanding of the organization of institutional pharmacy. In the third part, the ethnographic data gathered in a pharmacy department are used to show how one of these theoretical frameworks, structuring theory, offers an original representation of its organization.

Discussion - The authors underscore the diversity of representations and present situations commonly encountered in pharmacy departments. They then illustrate the difficulty reconciling the different perspectives and discuss how structuring theory can be used to remedy this problem. Ethnographic data gathered in a hospital pharmacy department are used to demonstrate the theories presented.

Conclusion - The authors situate our research in the perspective of developing the role of institutional pharmacy in the context of local service networks.

This article proposes a new, explicit, and integrated ontological framework to stimulate project management research. It suggests that the ontological question should be viewed as a sixfacet diamond that represents a set of root assumptions about projects. The article conveys the idea that whenever a project management researcher emphasizes a specific facet, he or she knowingly or unknowingly leaves the other five facets in the dark in his or her research. This article calls for attention on the ground ontological assumptions of project management research in order to transcend the abstract epistemological and methodological debates and concentrate on what really divides the different theoretical positions.

In terms of health care, the establishment of networks often consists only of implanting new normative organizational models for the delivery of care and service. Networking actions are undertaken using this approach, with varying degrees of success, based upon a preconceived notion of how the various groups of actors will behave in an organization and what the consequences of their actions will be. In the health care field, the development and performance of solidarity cooperatives increasingly depends on the creation of networks with the public system.  This is why various integration projects are launched. In a context of limited resources, feasibility analyses for such projects tend to focus mainly on the needs to be met and resources to be committed. This article addresses the issue of the interface between public health and clinical health within the context of the search for networking approaches geared to a more integrated delivery of health services. The articulation of an operative interface is complicated by the fact that the definition of networking modalities involves complex intra- and interdisciplinary and intra- and interorganizational systems across which a new transversal dynamics of intervention practices and exchanges between service structures must be established. A better understanding of the situation is reached by shedding light on the rationale underlying the organizational methods that form the bases of the interface between these two sectors of activity. The Quebec experience demonstrates that neither the structural-functionalist approach, which emphasizes remodelling establishment structures and functions as determinants of integration, nor the structural-constructivist approach, which prioritizes distinct fields of practice in public health and clinical health, adequately serves the purpose of networking and integration. Consequently, a theoretical reframing is imperative. In this regard, structuration theory, which fosters the simultaneous study of methods of inter-structure coordination and inter-actor cooperation, paves the way for a better understanding of the situation and, in turn, to the emergence of new integration possibilities.

There are two objectives to the present research: first, to examine the anxiety levels of 120 subjects (50 men and 70 women) facing a situation in which change is being announced; secondly, to explore the relative levels to which certain personality traits in these subjects contribute to variations in anxiety levels following a change announcement. Results suggest that a change announcement increases anxiety in those confronted by it, and that certain combinations of personality traits explain, in part, the levels of anxiety experienced. Organizational implications are discussed and research questions are presented.
